The definitive guide: What to see and do in Tarifa in 3 days

Only 3 days to discover Tarifa? It may sound like mission impossible, but I assure you that it is the perfect time to take a “crush” and promise to come back.

Tarifa is not just a destination; it is a sensation. It is the southernmost point of Europe, where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic embrace (literally) and Africa seems to be at hand. It is the capital of wind, a paradise for water sports and a haven with a bohemian atmosphere that engages.

If you've never been, don't worry. We have designed this 3-day itinerary step by step, designed for you to squeeze every minute, eat luxury and leave feeling almost like a local.

All you need is a desire for adventure and a good “base camp” where you can recharge your batteries every night. And we know a lot about that.

Let's get started!

Day 1: The historical heart and the magic of the Strait of Gibraltar

The first day will be dedicated to getting situated, understanding the history of Tarifa and witnessing one of the most famous sunsets in Spain.

Morning: A charming labyrinth (The old town)

Our route begins by crossing the emblematic Puerta de Jerez, the medieval entrance to the old town. Get ready to get lost (it's the best part) in a labyrinth of narrow white streets, Andalusian courtyards full of flowers and small craft and fashion stores. boho-chic.

Don't miss out:

  • The Church of San Mateo: The Gothic heart of the city.
  • The Plaza de Santa Maria: Known as the “Plaza de la Ranita”.
  • The Castle of Guzmán el Bueno: An impressive fortress overlooking the harbor and Africa. The entrance is worth it to understand the strategic importance of Tarifa.

Afternoon: Where Two Seas Meet (Isla de las Palomas)

After lunch (we recommend tapas in the center), we will walk to the port.

You will see a stone path that goes into the sea: it is the Pigeon Island Causeway. This is the exact geographical point that divides the Mediterranean Sea (calmer, on your left) from the Atlantic Ocean (rougher, on your right).

Although the island itself (a former military zone) is not always open to the public, the walk is a must. Feeling the wind and seeing the two seas collide is a unique sensation.

Sunset: The ritual of Tarifa

The sunset in Tarifa is sacred. You have two options:

  1. On the beach: Go to the Los Lances Beach or to the Girl Beach (next to the harbor) and just sit on the sand.
  2. In a Chiringuito: Have a mojito at one of the many beach bars while the sun goes down over the Atlantic.

Evening: Dinner in the hull

The old town, which is quiet during the day, is transformed at night. There is an incredible gastronomic offer, from traditional tapas bars where you can eat the best red tuna to Moroccan restaurants or high quality pizzerias.

➡️ Your rest is key: After a first day wandering the streets and beaches, you'll want to collapse in a comfortable place. Can you imagine arriving at your own apartment, taking a relaxing shower and having the historic center just a few steps away for dinner?

Day 2: The wind empire and pristine beaches

Today it's time to understand why Tarifa is the wind mecca of the world. We will go to the legendary beaches and explore the wildest nature of the Natural Park of the Strait.

Morning: The Kitesurfing Show (Valdevaqueros Beach)

Even if you don't go kitesurfing or windsurfing, you have to see it. Take the car and head for the Valdevaqueros Beach or the Los Lances beach (north zone).

The sky is literally filled with hundreds of colorful kites. It is a hypnotic visual spectacle. If you dare, this is the best place in the world to give a “baptism” (a first lesson) of kitesurfing. If not, just enjoy the atmosphere in one of its famous beach bars (such as Tumbao).

Afternoon: Punta Paloma Dune and views of Africa

Following the same road, you will arrive at Pigeon Point. A gigantic white sand dune awaits you there.

Don't be lazy: climb it! The effort has a double reward: incredible views of the coast and a swim in a pristine beach with crystal clear waters at your feet.

On the way back to Tarifa, make an obligatory stop at the Viewpoint of the Strait. On a clear day (which most days are), you will see the coast of Morocco so close that you can almost touch it. Mount Jebel Musa (the “Dead Woman”) will be waving at you from the other continent.

Evening: Relaxation and local gastronomy

Today we propose a more relaxed plan. Take advantage of the kitchen of your apartment to prepare a light dinner with local products bought at the Mercado de Abastos, or go out for dinner in the most modern area of Tarifa, outside the wall.

Day 3: Roman History or Giant Sightings

On your last day, we offer you two very different but equally spectacular plans. Choose according to your tastes.

Option A: A trip to ancient Rome (Baelo Claudia)

Only 20 minutes away by car, in the neighboring Bologna beach, the Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia.

These are not just any ruins. It is a complete Roman factory-city, perfectly preserved, right on the sand of the beach! It is one of the most important sites in Spain. You can stroll through its streets, see the theater, the temples and the ancient factories of Garum (a fish sauce that was a delicacy in the Empire).

Afterwards, you can take a last swim in the spectacular Bolonia Beach and have lunch in one of its beachfront restaurants (try the fresh fish).

Option B: Giants of the Strait (Whale watching)

If you prefer to stay in Tarifa, book a tour of whale and dolphin watching. From the port of Tarifa boats with marine biologists will take you to the heart of the Strait of Gibraltar.

It is the passage area for several species (common dolphins, striped dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and, with luck, even killer whales or sperm whales!) It is an exciting and respectful experience with the animals.

Afternoon: Last shopping and farewell

Spend your last few hours shopping for those souvenirs you saw in the stores in the old town. Here you won't find the typical souvenirs; you'll find handicrafts, local designer clothes and surf gear.

Have your last coffee in Piazza San Hiscio and start planning your next visit.

Tarifa is waiting for you, what are you waiting for?

Three days in Tarifa are enough for a lot: history, nature, sports, relax and an incredible gastronomy. You have felt the Levante and the Poniente, you have seen Africa and you have understood why everyone falls in love with this corner of Cadiz.

For your getaway to be round, you need a place where you feel at home. A place where you can leave your surfboard, rest after the beach or prepare a leisurely breakfast.

Don't leave your comfort to chance.
