The ultimate guide: What to see and do in Tarifa in 3 days

Only 3 days to discover Tarifa? It may sound like an impossible mission, but I assure you it's the perfect amount of time to fall in love and promise to return.

Tarifa is not just a destination; it's a feeling. It's the southernmost point of Europe, where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet (literally), and Africa seems within easy reach. It's the wind capital, a paradise for water sports, and a haven with an irresistible bohemian atmosphere.

If you've never been, don't worry. We've designed this 3-day itinerary step by step, so you can make the most of every minute, eat like royalty, and leave feeling almost like a local.

All you need is a thirst for adventure and a good "base camp" where you can recharge your batteries every night. And we know a thing or two about that.

Let's begin!

Day 1: The historic heart and magic of the strait

The first day will be dedicated to getting our bearings, understanding the history of Tarifa, and witnessing one of the most famous sunsets in Spain.

Tomorrow: A charming labyrinth (The Old Town)

Our route begins by crossing the iconic Jerez GateThe medieval entrance to the old town. Prepare to get lost (it's the best part) in a labyrinth of white alleyways, Andalusian patios overflowing with flowers, and small shops selling crafts and fashion. boho-chic.

Don't miss:

  • The Church of Saint Matthew: The Gothic heart of the city.
  • Santa Maria Square: Known as the “Little Frog Square”.
  • The Castle of Guzmán el Bueno: An impressive fortress overlooking the port and Africa. The entrance is worthwhile to understand the strategic importance of Tarifa.

Afternoon: Where two seas meet (Pigeon Island)

After lunch (we recommend tapas in the city center), we will walk towards the port.

You will see a stone path leading into the sea: it is the Causeway of the Island of the DovesThis is the exact geographical point that divides the Mediterranean Sea (calmer, to your left) from the Atlantic Ocean (rougher, to your right).

Although the island itself (a former military zone) isn't always open to the public, the walk is a must. Feeling the wind and watching the two seas collide is a unique sensation.

Sunset: The Tarifa ritual

Sunset in Tarifa is sacred. You have two options:

  1. On the beach: Go to the Lances Beach or to the Girl Beach (next to the port) and just sit on the sand.
  2. At a beach bar: Have a mojito at one of the many beach bars as the sun sets over the Atlantic.

Night: Dinner in the helmet

The old town, peaceful by day, transforms at night. There's an incredible culinary scene, from traditional tapas bars serving the best bluefin tuna to Moroccan restaurants and high-quality pizzerias.

➡️ Your rest is key (Call to action) After a day of exploring the streets and beaches, you'll want to unwind somewhere comfortable. Imagine arriving at your own apartment, taking a relaxing shower, and having the historic center just steps away for dinner.

Day 2: The empire of the wind and the virgin beaches

Today we'll understand why Tarifa is the world's windsurfing mecca. We'll head to its legendary beaches and explore the wildest nature of the Strait Natural Park.

Tomorrow: The Kitesurfing Spectacular (Valdevaqueros Beach)

Even if you're not planning on kitesurfing or windsurfing, you have to see it. Get in the car and head to the Valdevaqueros Beach wave Los Lances Beach (north area).

The sky literally fills with hundreds of colorful kites. It's a mesmerizing visual spectacle. If you're up for it, this is the best place in the world to try kitesurfing for the first time. If not, simply soak up the atmosphere at one of its famous beach bars (like Tumbao).

Afternoon: The Punta Paloma Dune and views of Africa

Following the same road, you will arrive at Punta PalomaA gigantic white sand dune awaits you there.

Don't be lazy: climb it! The effort has a double reward: incredible views of the coast and a swim in a pristine beach with crystal-clear waters that forms at your feet.

On your way back to Tarifa, make a mandatory stop at the Strait ViewpointOn a clear day (which is most days), you'll see the Moroccan coast so close you could almost touch it. Mount Jebel Musa (the "Dead Woman") will be waving to you from the other continent.

Evening: Relaxation and local cuisine

Today we suggest a more relaxed plan. Take advantage of your apartment's kitchen to prepare a light dinner with local products bought at the Mercado de Abastos (Central Market), or go out for dinner in the more modern area of Tarifa, outside the city walls.

Day 3: Roman History or Giant Sighting

On your last day, we offer two very different but equally spectacular plans. Choose according to your preferences.

Option A: A trip to ancient Rome (Baelo Claudia)

Just a 20-minute drive away, in the neighboring Bologna beach, are found the Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia.

These aren't just any ruins. It's a complete, perfectly preserved Roman city and factory, right on the beach! It's one of the most important archaeological sites in Spain. You can stroll through its streets, see the theater, the temples, and the old factories. Garum (a fish sauce that was a delicacy in the Empire).

Afterwards, you can take one last swim in the spectacular Bolonia Beach and eat at one of its beachfront restaurants (try the fresh fish).

Option B: Giants of the Strait (Whale Watching)

If you prefer to stay in Tarifa, book a tour of dolphin and whale watchingFrom the port of Tarifa, boats with marine biologists depart to take you to the heart of the Strait of Gibraltar.

It's a migratory route for several species (common dolphins, striped dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and, with luck, even orcas or sperm whales!). It's an exciting and animal-friendly experience.

Afternoon: Last-minute shopping and farewell

Spend your last few hours buying those souvenirs you saw in the shops of the old town. You won't find your typical souvenirs here; you'll find handicrafts, clothing from local designers, and surf gear.

Have your last coffee in Piazza San Hiscio and start planning your next visit.

Tarifa awaits you, what are you waiting for?

Three days in Tarifa offer so much: history, nature, sports, relaxation, and incredible cuisine. You've experienced the Levante and Poniente winds, glimpsed Africa, and understood why everyone falls in love with this corner of Cádiz.

To make your getaway perfect, you need a place where you feel at home. A place where you can leave your surfboard, relax after the beach, or prepare a leisurely breakfast.

Don't leave your comfort to chance.
