Total solar eclipse 2027 in Tarifa: time, guide and tips

Summary

On August 2, 2027 there will be a total solar eclipse that will be seen from the south of Spain. In Tarifa you will be able to experience the most spectacular part (totality), which lasts only a few minutes. In this post we explain what it is, what time to see it, how to do it safely, what to bring and a 48 hours plan in Tarifa to enjoy it without rushing.

The Monday, August 2, 2027 comes one of those moments that stick in your mind: a total solar eclipse. And yes, Tarifa is in a privileged place to live it.

If you are thinking of coming, our advice is very simple: come in good time, choose a place with a clear horizon and bring the right glasses.. With that, you already have half a plan.

What is a total solar eclipse?

A total eclipse occurs when the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun and the Sun. completely covers it for a few minutes (that part is called all).

How does it feel?

  • The light changes suddenly, as if the day “turned down the volume”.

  • It may cool down a bit.

  • You see a kind of halo around the Sun (the solar corona).

  • The atmosphere becomes... rare and precious. Silence, goose bumps and a lot of emotion.

Note: if you are not within the zone of totality, you will see it “partial”, like a bitten Sun, but without the full magic moment.

Time of the eclipse in Tarifa (local time)

In Tarifa, the eclipse will be in the morning:

  • Beginning (partial phase): approx. 09:40

  • Maximum: approx. 10:47

  • End: approx. 12:00

  • Totality in Tarifa: approx. 4 min 40 s

These times may change a little bit depending on the exact point where you place yourself. The ideal is to confirm it with a map/astronomical calculator a few days before.

Where to see it in Tarifa (without complications)

The important thing here is not “the secret place”, but rather may you have an open sky and be comfortable.

Look for a place with:

  • Broad horizon (beach or open viewpoint).

  • Few things in front (buildings, trees, poles...).

  • Space to sit and be quiet.

✅ Practical trick: carry a plan A and plan B (if you see clouds to one side, you move with margin).

Safety: how to watch the eclipse without hurting yourself

This is the most important part of the post.

  • ✅ Usa eclipse-approved glasses (ISO 12312-2).

  • ❌ Normal sunglasses, X-rays, dark glasses, etc. are not suitable.

  • ✅ Only during the all (when the Sun is 100% obscured) can be viewed without a filter.

  • As soon as the first glow reappears... glasses again.

What to bring (quick checklist)

  • ISO 12312-2 (real) goggles

  • Water

  • Cap + sunscreen

  • Something to sit on (towel or folding chair)

  • Some snacks / breakfast

  • External battery

  • A thin sweatshirt (in case it cools down a bit at the moment)

Ideal 48-hour plan in Tarifa around the eclipse

A simple, family-friendly and stress-free plan.

  • Quiet evening (no running) and early dinner.

  • Leave the “eclipse kit” (glasses, water, etc.) ready.

Night

  • Go to sleep early (the next day you want to get up early).

Day 2 (Monday, August 2 - day of the eclipse)

Tomorrow

  • Light breakfast.

  • Leave with time to the chosen place (better to arrive with margin).

  • Enjoy the eclipse: start → maximum → end.
